Sheep

Schafe – Moutons

In order to prevent a very steep hill close to the house from being invaded by bushes, and thus reducing the possibility for orchids and other flowers to survive, we had borrowed in summer 2010 sheep from the Heidschnucken breed from an acquaintance. As he did not have any sheep to borrow for 2011, we bought 4 female sheep from the breed Skudden. This is a very ancient German breed, the animals are used to live all seasons outside and are renowned to be very resistant to harsh living conditions. They come in various colors, stand 50 to 60 cm high, can weigh up to 50 kg and males have nice horns whereas females do not have horns. Close to extinction after WWII with a thousand animals, there exist around 2000 animals nowadays.
